Career Information for Health Care Aides in Calgary

Our Health Care Aide program will prepare you to work in a hospital, nursing home, group home or another type of care facility. This comprehensive course lasts 21 weeks and will include classroom hours, practicum experience and home study hours. You'll learn everything from the role of a Health Care Aide to effective ways of communication and how to accurately take and record vital signs.

A Health Care Aide can also be called a Caregiver, Client Care Attendant, Nursing Assistant, Personal Care Attendant or Home Support Worker. Regardless of your title, your job is to keep patients safe and provide assistance and support for people who are elderly, disabled or ill. These patients may need short-term care or long-term help, and their condition may be acute or terminal. You must be prepared for all of these scenarios. Educational and Physical Requirements
In order to work as a Health Care Aid in the province of Alberta, you must have graduated from a Government of Alberta Health Care Aide program. To enroll in the ABES Government of Alberta Health Care Aide Program in Calgary, you must have the following prerequisites:

  • Grade 10 Equivalency or Mature Student Status
  • Good English Comprehension (Gr. 10 or Equivalent)
  • Clear Security Clearance
  • Physical Ability to Carry Out the Work
  • Interview with Program Coordinator

Please also note that certification is not required or regulated for this profession.
